When Imagine announced the rollout of their Wimax product a few months ago, I started keeping an eye on their website to see if they’d extend cover to the Northwest. They’ve recently anounced that they’d be covering Sligo, but from what I’ve read about their product so far, it looks like it’s quite a disappointment.
Imagine advertise their Wimax product on their website as “fast reliable broadband with real speeds.” Their tagline is “Faster, Better, Cheaper” but it appears that the jury is still very much out on their claim. A long thread on Boards.ie has few positive comments with the concensus being that the overall service is flakey, speeds are nothing like advertised and customer service poor.
There are a number of user posted speed tests, with most showing download speeds of 2 — 3 Mb/s on a 7Mb subscription. Ping times are similarly poor. For a lot of people, the service appears to be no better than a mobile 3g connection.
If you’re an Imagine subscriber based in Sligo, it’d be interesting to hear your local experiences of Imagines Wimax product. It looks like it’ll take some time to get the service up on its feet properly but at the moment it doesn’t look it would be wise to switch over from your current providers just yet. I’m sure that time will tell.

I’ve been told by friends living in Sligo that the Wimax is not good. This does not sound very promising for Sligo to start with.
I have Wimax over here on the east coast and it just as bad. The phone is choppy and cracking all the time. The staff at imagine haven’t a clue what they talking about and your just passes from one person to the next during that time running up huge phone bill
I’m with wimax for about 6mths & i have to say that the customer service & the tech service were outstanding when they came out to my house & hooked me up! i had a slight tweek with 1 of the phones but the boys came straight out & badda bing done! i think the price is as good as your gonna get but in saying all that..the speeds ain’t up to scratch!! all we can do i’m afraid is just sit tight & hope the speeds are tip top come christmas..tik tok tik tok…
Does anyone expect any broadband connection in Ireland to be as advertised? I don’t. This is the failure of the government to ensure fast reliable broadband in Ireland. 6 meg is all most people can get on DSL through Eircom lines and is likely the max people will get for several years. Comreg seem only interested in protecting the rights of big isp’s rather than consumers! As long as isp’s are allowed to advertise “up to” speeds, that is a license for them to offer any crap speed they can get away with and it will never change without intervention, on a government level!
I just moved into a new office in Westmeath and decided to go with UPC. We’ve got a 20MB line and I am very impressed with speeds. I’ve done a few speed tests and am getting about 19554kbs which is pretty much on the mark. Quick installation, great customer service, and overall I can’t fault these guys.
