Imagine Wimax in Sligo — does it live up to the hype?

When Imagine announced the rollout of their Wimax product a few months ago, I started keeping an eye on their website to see if they’d extend cover to the Northwest. They’ve recently anounced that they’d be covering Sligo, but from what I’ve read about their product so far, it looks like it’s quite a disappointment.

Imagine advertise their Wimax product on their website as “fast reliable broadband with real speeds.” Their tagline is “Faster, Better, Cheaper” but it appears that the jury is still very much out on their claim. A long thread on Boards.ie has few positive comments with the concensus being that the overall service is flakey, speeds are nothing like advertised and customer service poor.

Typical Wimax Speed Test

Typical Wimax Speed Test

There are a number of user posted speed tests, with most showing download speeds of 2 — 3 Mb/s on a 7Mb subscription. Ping times are similarly poor. For a lot of people, the service appears to be no better than a mobile 3g connection.

If you’re an Imagine subscriber based in Sligo, it’d be interesting to hear your local experiences of Imagines Wimax product. It looks like it’ll take some time to get the service up on its feet properly but at the moment it doesn’t look it would be wise to switch over from your current providers just yet. I’m sure that time will tell.

I’ve been told by friends living in Sligo that the Wimax is not good. This does not sound very promising for Sligo to start with.

Does anyone expect any broadband connection in Ireland to be as advertised? I don’t. This is the failure of the government to ensure fast reliable broadband in Ireland. 6 meg is all most people can get on DSL through Eircom lines and is likely the max people will get for several years. Comreg seem only interested in protecting the rights of big isp’s rather than consumers! As long as isp’s are allowed to advertise “up to” speeds, that is a license for them to offer any crap speed they can get away with and it will never change without intervention, on a government level!

id advise no body to get wimax, its rubbish, im paying for 7mb speeds but most of the time i only get about 2 or 3mb speed, the other day i got 5mb speed so i down loaded a movie that was only 700mb memory and it took 6 hours to download, and the customer support is crap aswell, they will tell u loads of bullshit to why you have poor internet,ie were u live even though the sales person selling u wimax will tell u that there is great speed were u live.they will tell u that there are too many people coming off the same wimax server even though the sales teams will tell u that there only have a small amount of people on 1 server, u dont get 2 months free security because the only send u the security software after your first 2 months ,then u pay 4 euro a month for it,i had clearwire years ago and i was gettin only 2mb speed and that was faster than wimax so dont be brain washed by the song and stick to your eircom

I just moved into a new office in Westmeath and decided to go with UPC. We’ve got a 20MB line and I am very impressed with speeds. I’ve done a few speed tests and am getting about 19554kbs which is pretty much on the mark. Quick installation, great customer service, and overall I can’t fault these guys.

DO NOT, repeat, NOT touch Imagine Wimax. We have had it for nearly 6 weeks now. The internet kept kicking us off, the phone kicks us off after less than 3 minutes if you are lucky enough to even make a call. The help-line ( what a joke) is constantly engaged. I have now instructed Imagine to come and get their their equipment, make good my wall, (even worse than Sky) and reinburse installation fees €210!!!! Two tin cans and a bit of string would be better.
